NEWARK, Del. - Two members of the University of Delaware track & field program earned a spot on the 2024 Academic All-District Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Team, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday (June 18). Sarah Daniels and Jahnia Hodge join the elite list of the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the track and in the classroom, with a GPA of 3.50 or higher and be at least a sophomore academically. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes track & field/cross country honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.Â
This is Daniels' second-straight year earning this honor. The Burke, Va. native is working towards graduating with her Master's degree in Public Policy after spending her final season with the Blue Hens. Daniels made her first-ever appearance in the NCAA First Rounds of her career and led the way for the Blue Hens in the 3000m Steeplechase, which was the first time Delaware was represented in the event in program history. The senior distance runner earned the postseason berth thanks to her monster personal-best/second in school history time of 10:24.16 that was ranked 44th in the East Region prior to the start of First Rounds competition. Daniels was set to race in the third heat and clocked a time of 10:36.75 to finish 13th in the heat, 32nd overall to conclude her stellar career in the Blue & Gold uniform. Daniels will pursue a career in criminal justice reform policy advocacy.
Hodge, the Dix Hills, N.Y. native, recently graduated with her bachelor's degree in Animal Science after being part of the jumps event group for two seasons. At the 2024 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Outdoor Championships, Hodge earned three more jumps thanks to her first leap of 12.13m. She then set new personal-best marks in attempt four and again at her final jump of 12.35m, also earning her first collegiate medal. Her mark sits fourth in school history.Â
With her impressive performance in the pit and in the classroom, Hodge advances to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First- and second-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced on July 9, 2024. Voting for the Academic All-America women's track & field/cross country teams begins today at noon ET and closes Tuesday, June 25, at 11:59 pm ET. All CSC members are eligible to vote on the ballots in their division. To vote, go to www.collegesportscommunicators.com/awards.
