NEWARK, Del. -The University of Delaware track & field team head coach Josh Hayman announces the hiring of Steven Sanchez as the program's Associate Head Coach, who is set to start on August 13. Sanchez will primarily work with the throws group, and brings a wealth of knowledge to the Fightin' Blue Hens with a decade worth of coaching experience.Â
Â
"I am thrilled to welcome Steven to our staff," Hayman said. "His unrivaled passion for the sport, commitment to student-athlete development, and deep knowledge of track and field makes him an outstanding addition to our staff. I am confident that he will have a tremendous impact on our storied throws group and elevate our program as a whole. I cannot wait to see him assist in leading our Blue Hens."Â Â
Â
Sanchez' last stop was at Abilene Christian University as an assistant track & field coach/recruiting coordinator this past season. With ACU, he directed and led practices for the throws event group, and multis with throwing events, and led recruiting efforts.Â
Â
Prior to ACU, he spent four seasons with USC Upstate in the same role. Under his guidance, five throws men's and women's athletes won Big South individual championships between the weight throw, hammer throw, and javelin. The Spartans were represented by a throws athlete at the First Round of the NCAA track & field championships each season he was at USC Upstate. In addition, the Spartans' Channing Ferguson earned Second Team All-American honors in the outdoor high jump back in 2023.
Â
From 2016-20, Sanchez was an assistant track & field coach/distance recruiting coordinator at East Tennessee State. At ETSU, he helped guide Benjamin Johnson to seven individual championships across javelin, discus throw, weight throw, shot put and hammer throw. Johnson received Second Team All-American honors in 2018 in the indoor weight throw. Sanchez also guided Nathan Rivera to a men's heptathlon conference championship in 2017, and Alyssa Whipkey to a women's javelin conference championship in 2018.Â
Â
Sanchez was also an assistant coach at SUNY-Plattsburgh in 2016 and a graduate assistant at King University from 2015-16.Â
Â
"I am excited to be a part of Delaware's program," Sanchez said. "I want to thank Coach Hayman, Dan Watson, and the support staff for their parts in the hiring process. From the start, it was evident how special the University of Delaware is."Â
