Cross Country Earns Top Spot at Lehigh Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Delaware cross country team finished first overall in their season-opening race at the Lehigh Invitational Friday evening as the Blue Hens came away with five top-10 finishes to pace the competition.
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Gabriella Gait-Smith led the way for the Blue Hens as the junior transfer placed second overall at 21:56.6 for her first race in the Blue & Gold.
- Marissa Dailey finished fourth overall at 22:24.8.
- Rachael Starr, Ella Peterson, Erin McGoey, and Stephanie Herrera finished seventh, eighth, ninth, and 10th respectively as all four runners were within four seconds of one another.
- Friday's race was Peterson and McGoey's first collegiate race.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gait-Smith finished 10 seconds behind the lead, but was 13.1 seconds ahead of her closest competitor in Ava Curry from Saint Joseph's.
- Dailey followed Curry as the senior was five seconds ahead to solidify her fourth place finish.
RACE NOTES
- Delaware's seventh through 10th finishes helped UD take home the second best team score between both the men's and women's teams.
- Delaware was the only team with five or more top-10 finishes on the evening.
UP NEXT
The Hens look forward to the Delaware Invitational on Friday, Sept. 20 at White Clay Creek State Park. The race is set to begin at 9 a.m.
