Mahmud Named as a Coach for the U.S. Under-23 National Team

NEWARK, Del. - USRowing has announced University of Delaware head coach Asiya Mahmud was selected as a coach for the 2024 Under 23 National Team, which will compete in St. Catharines, Canada on August 18-25.Â
Mahmud is one of 13 coaches on staff for the team, as she is joined by Sergio Espinoza, Sarah Trowbridge, Craig Hoffman, John Graves, Trevor Michelson, Niles Garrett, Elizabeth Mitchell, Andrew Hess, Graham Marks, Fergal Barry, Adam Wehking, and Dave O'Neil. Mahmud will work with the women's four, with athletes Carly Legenzowski (C.) (South Salem, N.Y./University of Texas), Anna Garrison (4) (Seattle, Wash./University of Texas), Jordan Freer (3) (Lotus, Calif./University of Washington), Olivia Meskan (2) (Sherrard, Ill./University of Wisconsin), and Olivia Bachert (1) (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Syracuse University).
The U.S. will have crews competing in 15 events including the men's and women's single sculls, double sculls, quadruple sculls, four with coxswain, and eight, as well as the men's pair, men's and women's four, lightweight men's single, and lightweight men's pair. The U.S. will not be sending boats in the women's pair or lightweight women's events.
At the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, the U.S. won five medals including two golds, one silver, and two bronze medals. The U.S. ranked fifth in the medal table and finished in a tie for third in total medals. Eleven athletes return from the 2024 U23 squad.
Mamhud completed her first season as head coach of the Blue Hens during the 2023-2024 season. In her first year with Delaware, the Blue Hens earned two CAA Boat of the Week honors during the spring season in April. UD also had two All-Conference honorees at the CAA Championhips, and a program record 13 CRCA Scholar-Athlete selections.Â
