Field Hockey Falls to Lafayette on the Road

EASTON, Pa. – The University of Delaware field hockey team dropped its season-opener Sunday afternoon as the Blue Hens fell to Lafayette 1-0 on the road.
HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore Rachael Whitehead led the offense with five shots and three on frame while senior Valentina Martorell tallied three shots with one on goal.
- Junior transfer and goalkeeper Cecile van Eijck totaled five saves on the day, allowing just one goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lafayette opened Sunday's match with four shots in the first quarter with van Eijck making one save at the 6:17 mark.
- At the 8:50 stamp, the Leopards put the first tally on the board as Lineke Spaans snuck one past van Eijck.
- The Blue Hens tallied zero shots in the first half, but finished the day with 10, including seven in the fourth quarter.
- In the fourth, Martorell recorded all three of her shots on the day, and despite being awarded five penalty corners in the final quarter, the Hens could not capitalize.
GAME NOTES
- UD recorded seven penalty corners compared to just five for Lafayette.
- Both goalkeepers tallied five saves on the afternoon
UP NEXT
Delaware heads to Lewisburg, Pa. for a non-conference bout with the Bucknell Bison on Sept. 6. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
