Men's Soccer Drops Second CAA Matchup at Charleston
9/21/2024 8:47:00 PM | Men's Soccer
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team fought hard against no. 23 Charleston in their Saturday afternoon match but unfortunately came up short finishing, 0-1. The Hens overall record sinks to 4-3-1 and conference to 0-2.
ON THE RECORD – "We just weren't sharp enough today," head coach Tommy McMenemy said. "We gave the ball away too often and too easily and were second best for too much of the game in terms of physical duels. Our game management to give up a goal 30 seconds before half is hard to live with, but that's where we are in our learning curve now. Our response was good after the break, but you're always chasing at that point. We'll continue to learn and grow, and now Campbell next week becomes a big game, so we'll see how we respond."
HEN HIGHLIGHTS
Delaware will return home for an 11 a.m. Saturday match next week against Campbell.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Adam Vik tallied six saves against seven shots on goal, resulting in a .857 save percentage.
- Rich Monath, Luke Chatten, Justin Ruth, & Vik all played a full 90 minutes.
- Charleston came on strong during the opening minutes as they attempted five shots with two shots on goal saved by Vik.

- After an impressive defensive removal of the ball from the Delaware box by Luke Chatten, Charleston caught the Hens with their guard down and earned the only goal in the game with thirteen seconds remaining in the half.
- The second half proved a stalemate with no avail from either side. Though two impressive shots were made by Monath, the Hens could not catch up to the Charleston lead.
- Due to the extreme heat in South Carolina, both teams took multiple hydration breaks and had many substitutions throughout the match.
- Charleston enters CAA play on a win after defeating Delaware, they are currently ranked 23 on the United Soccer Coaches poll.
- Besides Charleston, CAA opponents Hofstra and Elon also hold spots on that ranking list at twelve and fourteen. Campbell received votes.
