NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team, led by head coach Sarah Jenkins, is set for an action-packed 2024 season featuring four home games, six road games, and a competitive tournament during the Thanksgiving break in New Orleans. The Blue Hens aim to make a significant mark as they reveal its non-conference schedule for the season Tuesday evening.
Delaware will kickstart the campaign with back-to-back road trips five days apart. The excitement starts on Monday, Nov. 4, as the Blue Hens head to the nation's capital to face George Washington for its sixth all-time meeting.
Six days later, on Saturday, Nov. 9, the Blue & Gold travel to Philadelphia to face La Salle in their 27th all-time meeting. The last time both squads met was during the 2010-11 campaign when the Blue Hens left Philadelphia with the 59-48 road win. Delaware has dominated this matchup, winning eight of the last ten games, including the last three.
The Blue Hens return to the First State to open its home slate on Tuesday, Nov. 12, against Temple. This will be exactly 11 years to the date (Nov. 12, 2013) that the Owls will face Delaware inside Bob Carpenter Center. Although Temple won their last encounter, Delaware holds a solid home record of 6-4 against the Owls and looks forward to leveraging home-court advantage.
A week later, Delaware welcomes Colgate for their second-ever meeting. The Blue Hens emerged victorious in their last clash in 1983 and aim to continue their winning ways. Colgate made a postseason run in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) rolling past UAlbany (64-50) and Providence (54-41) in the first- and second- rounds before falling to Vermont (65-55) in the Super Sweet Sixteen.
Delaware will head to Rhode Island on Sunday, Nov. 24 to face Providence inside Alumni Hall. This will be the fifth time in program history both teams will meet with the Blue Hens winning the last two matchups. The last time Delaware faced a Big East opponent and won (93-88) was during the 2020-21 campaign against St. John's inside Bob Carpenter Center. Providence faced Colgate in the second round of the WNIT and saw its season come to an end.
The Blue Hens will spend the Thanksgiving break in New Orleans ready to compete in the 2024 Big Easy Classic Nov. 29-30. Delaware will take on Tarleton State first on Black Friday, Nov. 29 before closing out the tournament against Evansville on the 30th. This will be the first time Delaware will play against both the Texans and the Purple Aces.
The Blue & Gold returns to campus to open December with a matchup against in-state rival Delaware State on Dec. 7. Holding a dominant 13-2 record in this rivalry, the Blue Hens vies to hoist up the Route 1 Rivalry trophy inside Bob Carpenter Center on Delaware Day.
The home non-conference slate concludes with a game against Villanova on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Meeting for the 10th time in program history, Delaware has a six-game winning streak against the Wildcats since the 2006-07 season. The most recent time both teams met was during the 2020-21 season and Delaware captured the 77-70 win and inside the Bob Carpenter Center was during the 2010-11 campaign with the Blue Hens walking away with the 69-62 home win. Villanova had postseason success last year at the inaugural Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT). The squad advanced to the WBIT championship game after rolling past VCU, Virginia, St. Joseph's and Penn State before falling to the eventual champions, Illinois (71-57).
The Blue Hens then embark on a three-game road trip, starting with Navy in Annapolis on Thursday, Dec. 19 for its 12th all-time meeting. Delaware and Navy last met during the 2010-11 season where the Blue Hens captured the five-point victory, 60-55, over the Midshipmen, extending the win streak to four games.
Next, the team heads to Norfolk, Va., on Dec. 22, to face Old Dominion for its 26th all-time meeting. The Blue Hens will look to bounce back into the winning column against the Monarchs after falling 57-53 last season. Old Dominion made an appearance in the WNIT last season and saw the campaign close in the first round against North Carolina A&T (48-45).
The non-conference schedule wraps up on Monday, Dec. 30, in Cambridge, Mass., with a game against Harvard inside Lavietes Pavilion. Delaware looks to secure a victory in their third meeting with the Crimson.
