NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware's Morgan Hess was ranked ninth in the pitcher/utility rankings by D1 Softball, as announced by the organization on Tuesday morning.Â
In her first season as a Blue Hen in 2024, Hess became the second player in Delaware history to earn All-Region honors at the Utility/Pitcher spot, joining Amanda Stacevicz in 2010. After transferring from Presbyterian College, she hit to .300/.327/.521 with 14 doubles, a triple, five home runs, and 24 RBIs while pitching to a 2.33 ERA in 126 innings. Hess went 14-6 with a save in the circle, along with six complete games and a shutout. On April 20 against Hofstra, she threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 win, then followed that up with a three-hit shutout the following day. Hess ranked fourth in the conference in doubles, fifth in wins, sixth in slugging percentage and ERA, eighth in BAA, ninth in shutouts, and 10th in home runs and innings pitched. From March 9-April 28 of last season, she appeared in 12 games and went 11-0, with Delaware winning all 12 games. On March 16, Hess hit two home runs and drove in five runs in game one of a doubleheader against N.C. A&T, then got the win on the mound by pitching five innings and allowing just three hits and striking out five during game two. She earned CAA Player of the Week on March 5 and April 29 and Pitcher of the Week on April 22. She was also named First-Team All-CAA, and was a CSC Academic All-District Team selection and Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete.
For her career, Hess has hit .317/.379./656 with 31 doubles, 34 home runs, and 103 RBIs in 149 games, and has gone 37-20 in the circle with one save in 79 appearances with a 2.54 ERA in 31 complete games in the circle. At Presbyterian, she was a two-time Big South All-Conference selection and the all-time Presbyterian College home run leader. She led the conference in home runs in 2022 and 2023 and set single-season Presbyterian College records in batting average, RBI, total bases, home runs, and slugging percentage in 2022.
Hess and the Blue Hens are coming off a season in which they set program records in single-season wins and conference wins, and tied their record for longest win streak at 13 and longest conference win streak at 10. The Blue Hens also led the CAA in batting average, on base percentage, slugging percentage, runs scored, doubles, and total bases. UD pitched to a 1.98 ERA, finishing ninth in NCAA, and ranked 27th nationally in shutouts. The Blue Hens open up the 2025 year, their last season in the CAA before joining CUSA, in Tampa, Fla. on February 6, with games against Illinois State, South Florida, Georgia Southern, Michigan, and Florida.
