Men’s Basketball Erases 16-Point Deficit but Couldn’t Get Past Northeastern in CAA Opener

BOSTON – University of Delaware men's basketball (7-7, 0-1 CAA) erased a 16-point deficit in the second half but couldn't get past Northeastern (9-5, 1-0 CAA) in the league opener Thursday evening, 80-77.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- John Camden finished with a team-high 21 points on a 6-of-10 evening, including 4-of-7 from long range. He tied his career best with eight rebounds.
- Niels Lane and Izaiah Pasha each scored 14 points.
- Trent Middleton Jr. added 12 points and Erik Timko tallied 10. The former dished out five assists.
- Delaware out shot Northeastern in all three categories and won the turnover margin.
- After the Hens scored the opening bucket of the game, the home team ripped off six-straight points for a 6-2 lead. Northeastern went into the first stoppage with a 13-6 advantage at 15:33. The Huskies continued to widen the gap into the under-12 timeout at 23-12 with 10:40 on the clock. The Hens pulled within six on two occasions, but Northeastern held a 44-34 lead at the half. UD hit six of its last eight field goals of the half and held the Huskies one of their final seven attempts.
- A few minutes into the second half, Delaware tallied a 10-3 run over 2:52 to make it a four-point game – 53-49 with 12:54 remaining. The Hens would only pull within four into the final media timeout at 3:55 with the home squad up 74-66. The Blue & Gold took a 77-76 lead on a Camden free throw with 1:37 on the clock to erase the 16-point deficit. After a pair from the stripe and a one-point lead for the Huskies, both teams had a chance to score another bucket. A UD foul with under a second left sent Northeastern to the line for another pair to push the gap to three.
- Houston Emory made his first career start.
- Delaware was without three players due to illness – Tahron Allen, Kobe Jerome, and Cavan Reilly.
Delaware returns to Newark and will take on Monmouth on Saturday at 4 p.m.
