Women’s Basketball Nearly Erases 17-Point Deficit On Friday Against Elon

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team, who at one point trailed by 17 points, came within one shot of Elon on Friday night, falling 69-67. The Blue Hens fall to 4-12, while the Phoenix improve to 11-6.

HENS HIGHLIGHTS
- Delaware shot 56-percent from beyond the arc, making 9-of-16 attempts.
- Rebecca Demeke scored a team-high 13 points, going 3-for-5 from three-point land.
- Tara Cousins posted 12 points, matching Demeke with 3-of-5 from deep.
- Chloe Wilson joined Demeke and Cousins in double figures, tallying 10 points and eight boards before fouling out.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- At the game's initial media timeout, UD held an 11-8 lead with 4:53 remaining in the first frame. Elon would finish the quarter on a 12-3 run, leading 20-14 after the first.
- An 8-0 stretch for the Phoenix led to a Hens' timeout with Elon leading 28-17. The visitors took a 17-point lead into the locker room at the break.
- The Blue & Gold scored the first seven points of the second half, holding Elon scoreless for the opening 3:21 of the third.
- Elon held a 65-53 advantage with 4:57 remaining at the game's final media stoppage. The Hens tallied an 8-0 stretch in 2:52 that led to an Elon timeout with 3:16 to go, cutting the deficit to six. A personal 6-0 run for Cousins brought the home team within one at 68-67 with 17 ticks remaining. UD had one last opportunity on a last second shot, but couldn't convert.

- Arantxa Portalez made her return to the lineup after going 48 days between games played.
