The Coaching Couple: Patty and Brendon Post Have Delaware Golf in Good Place

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's and women's golf programs are in good hands and have been for several years. It helps, of course, when those hands are married to each other. Patty and Brendon Post have been coaching together for nearly 20 years, including at UD since 2011 when Patty was hired as Delaware's first women's golf head coach and Brendon as her assistant.
The two first met in 2001 and were married in 2005. While they worked together as teaching professionals at a golf learning center, they first coached collegiately together when Patty became the head coach of the women's program at Georgetown in 2006. During their tenure at Georgetown, the Hoyas saw constant growth that included team top-five finishes, multiple individual medalist and runner-up finishes, and several All-Big East selections.
"Regardless of who your coaches are on your staff you must have a lot of trust in them," Patty said. "We all spend a lot of time together, different from most other professions, as we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together for 50 days a year. When it was just the two of us, it was an amazing asset to have Brendon as my assistant coach because we could connect at all times of the day about the team."
Patty and Brendon came to Newark in 2011 when the Blue Hens started the women's golf team. They formed a program that has enjoyed immense success over the past 14 seasons that includes 13 team victories and three CAA Championships and subsequent NCAA Championship berths. Three Blue Hens have won CAA individual titles and two have been named CAA Rookie of the Year. Patty has received plenty of accolades as she has earned three CAA Coach of the Year awards and two LPGA Northeast Section Coach of the Year honors and one LPGA National Coach of the Year award.
"It has been great coaching with her," Brendon added. "I basically know what she is going to do and say and hopefully she knows what I am going to do and say. When we are working with our athletes it is great because we can say the same thing two different ways to get the desired results that we are looking for in order to help the athlete."
In 2017, Patty was promoted to director of golf programs as she began overseeing all aspects of both the men's and women's golf teams. Brendon also began working with both programs as an assistant coach and director of player development. He was promoted to associate head coach in September 2020 as the two continued to work with both programs.
"I have complete faith in his knowledge of the game of golf and improvement strategies which is why I initially gave him the title of director of player development," Patty said.
On the men's side, the duo has helped lead a resurgence in the program as UD has had multiple team victories and several top-10 finishes. Under their leadership, the Blue Hens have set several program records for team rounds and the 2019-20 squad set a school record with a 74.21 team stroke average. Roberto Nieves set several individual Delaware records and Casper Nerpin was named the 2022 CAA Rookie of the Year.
Prior to the 2023-24 season, Delaware added a third full-time assistant coach in Charlton Zimmerman. This allowed the coaching staff to split with Patty and Jackie Mullens, who joined the Blue Hens in 2021, to work exclusively with the women's team while Brendon and Zimmerman coach the men. In November 2023, Brendon was promoted to his current title of head men's golf coach.
"Jackie and Charlton are truly amazing," Patty said. "They bring charisma and energy to both teams and are wonderful communicators and bridge any gaps needed."
"The first year-plus of coaching the men has been a lot of fun but it was a pretty seamless transition," Brendon said. "We took over the men's program in 2017. The players that we have brought in have done a great job of developing a great foundation for the expectations for the program. Each year the program gets better and better. They are very hard workers on and off the course. Our scoring average keeps getting lower every year and our GPA keeps going up every year."
Patty and Brendon aim to keep the momentum going as the Blue Hens enter their spring seasons. The women, who won a pair of tournaments in the fall, open up play this weekend at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational as the Hens prepare to defend their CAA title. The men's team, which had two runner-up finishes in the fall and four top-five showings, will open the spring season March 10-11 at the Surf Club Invitational.
