Crossman Earns First Career Win and Cahalan Records 100th Career Hit During Day One of Mizuno Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - University of Delaware softball began the Mizuno Classic by splitting its games against Virginia and Penn to begin the weekend. Freshman Josie Crossman earned her first career victory in the circle and Mary Beth Cahalan recorded her 100th career hit during the 8-0 win over the Quakers.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS VS PENN

Crossman pitched five shutout innings and allowed just four hits with one walk allowed and three strikeouts.
Cahalan had a two-run double, walked, and scored two runs.
Sydney Shaffer went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Gianna Costaro had a two-run single and drew a walk.
Katie Scheivert went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, walk, and two runs scored.
Marlayna Capaldi had an RBI double and scored two runs.
Grace Hausamann recorded her first career hit as a Blue Hen and scored two runs.
Emma Denison pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout.

HEN HIGHLIGHTS VS VIRGINIA

Shaffer drove in both runs with a solo home run and an RBI single.
Costaro went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Cahalan drew two walks.
Scheivert had a hit and a run scored.
Morgan Hess had a hit and two walks.
Billie Kerwood struck out five and allowed two runs and just one walk in 4.2 innings pitched.

HOW IT HAPPENED VS PENN

After two two-out singles, Crossman pitched out of trouble in the first inning with a strikeout to end the frame.
Two runners reached base in the second for Penn, but Crossman left them stranded again.
Delaware scored the first runs of the game in the third. Capaldi, Hausamann, and Cahalan all reached base to load the bases. With two outs, Costaro brought in two runs with a single into left field.
UD broke the game open in the fourth with four runs. Capaldi brought in Hess with an RBI double, and Cahalan doubled in her and Scheivert to put UD up 5-0. Shaffer gave the Blue Hens a 6-0 lead with a single to left field.
Crossman pitched a perfect fourth and fifth inning to end her night,
In the sixth, Hausaman singled and advanced on a passed ball before scoring on a double by Scheivert.
Scheivert would score on an error to give Delaware an 8-0 lead.
Denison relieved Crossman and threw a scoreless sixth, recording a strikeout to end the game.

GAME NOTES

Cahalan recorded her 100th career hit, with 93 of them coming while she was a member of Dartmouth.
Cahalan has reached base in all seven games to begin her Delaware career.
Shaffer's home run vs Virginia was the seventh of her career, and the second straight game she hit a home run after hitting one against nationally-ranked Florida on February 8.
Shaffer has multi-hit games in three of her last four games, and has an RBI in five straight games. Her five-game RBI streak is the longest of her career.
Scheivert has 99 career hits. She has recorded a hit in six of Delaware's seven games played this season and has reached base in all seven games this season.
