Softball Clinches Big Series Win Over Elon With Walk-Off Victory

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball walked off Elon, 3-2 in eight innings, in the rubber match on Sunday, March 30. The win clinched the series victory and put the Blue Hens in a tie for first place in the CAA standings at 9-3 with Campbell, Elon, and Charleston.

HIGHLIGHTS

Billie Kerwood pitched all eight innings and allowed just four hits, two runs, one walk, and struck out 11.
Sydney Shaffer and Mary Beth Cahalan both hit solo home runs. Shaffer also walked twice and scored two runs, while Cahalan added a single.
Kristen Luzon had a pinch hit single.
Lillie Scheivert doubled, walked, and was hit by a pitch.
Morgan Hess recorded the walk-off RBI with a sacrifice fly.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Shaffer hit a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the first to get Delaware going.
Kerwood struck out two in a perfect second inning. Cahalan hit a home run in the bottom half to put Delaware up 2-0.
Elon scored a run on a homer in the fourth to cut UD's lead in half.
Kerwood recorded two more strikeouts in the fifth.
Elon even the score at two in the sixth.
Kerwood threw perfect seventh and eighth innings with three more strikeouts.
Scheivert led off the eighth inning with a double before Shaffer walked and Luzon had a pinch hit single to load the bases. With one out, Hess hit a fly ball to right field to score Shaffer to give Delaware the walk-off win.

GAME NOTES

Kerwood recorded her 600th career strikeout. She is the seventh active player in Division I to reach the mark.
Kerwood became the third pitcher in program history to reach 150 strikeouts in a season, joining Carolynn Sloat (187 - 2004, 180 - 2006) and Kristi O'Connell (177 - 1999, 170 - 2000).
Kerwood set a new career-high in wins in a season with her 13th.
Shaffer's home run was her 12th of the season and 17th of her career. She is one behind Michelle Grap (2010) for third most in a single-season in program history and three behind Mariah Kondravy (2015) and Anna Steinmetz (2016) for most in a season. She also broke a tie with Laura Streets for career home runs and stands alone in sixth place.
Shaffer has hit eight home runs in her last eight games. She has drawn a walk in six consecutive games and has reached base in a career-best 17 straight games.
Cahalan hit her second home run of the season and first at home. Her home run was the 11th of her career. She has reached base in a season-best 10-straight games.
Luzon recorded a pinch hit in all three games of the series and is now 10-for-21 (.476) as a pinch hitter this year.
Delaware's win was their second walk-off of the season. Ellie Talley hit a walk-off home run in game one of a doubleheader against Rider on March 18.
Delaware has hit 36 home runs this season, tied with the 2021 and 2023 seasons for second most in program history. The Blue Hens have 12 multi-home run games.
Delaware is 31-6 in March over the last two seasons.
