Softball Wins 10th Consecutive Game in 13-5 Win Over Hampton to Secure Series Sweep

HAMPTON, Va. - University of Delaware softball won its 10th consecutive game on April 19 as the Blue Hens defeated Hampton, 13-5, in five innings to finish off a series sweep. Delaware improved its record to 31-13 and 17-4 in conference play. Sydney Shaffer hit her 15th home run of the year to tie the single-season program record.

- Shaffer reached base in all four of her plate appearances (double, home run, walk, hit by pitch), and drove in three runs.
- Mary Beth Cahalan was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and five RBIs.
- Ryleigh Thomas hit a two-run home run and scored a pair of runs.
- Chloe Blantz went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, two RBIs, and two stolen bases.
- Ellie Talley was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
- Veronica Diomede also scored two runs and stole two bases.
- Billie Kerwood earned the win by striking out seven in four innings and allowed zero earned runs.
- Josie Crossman threw a scoreless inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Delaware scored 11 runs in the first three innings to take a commanding lead.
- Blantz and Cahalan both had RBI singles in the first inning.
- In the second inning, Delaware scored six runs on five hits. Thomas and Cahalan delivered the big hits with two-run home runs. Blantz had another RBI single and Shaffer drove in a run with a double.
- Katie Scheivert had a sacrifice fly in the third and Cahalan drove in two more runs with a single.
- Kerwood held Hampton without a hit until two outs in the third before the Pirates got two unearned runs back. Kerwood had struck out six of the first eight batters she faced.
- Kerwood pitched a scoreless fourth inning to end her day.
- Shaffer hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to give Delaware a 13-2 lead.
- After a three-run home run from Hampton in the fifth, Crossman came on in relief to record the final three outs.
GAME NOTES
- Shaffer (15) tied Mariah Kondravy (2015) and Anna Steinmetz (2016) for the most home runs in a single-season in Delaware history.
- Shaffer scored her 41st run of the season, tying Julz Garber (2024) for third most runs scored in a season and trailing only Leanna Gearhart (54, 2016) and Hannah Garber (48, 2022). She also now has 110 total bases - second most in a season behind Kondravy (117, 2015).
- Shaffer became the sixth player in program history to reach 20 career home runs, joining Steinmetz (44), Kondravy (34), Brooke Glanden (29), Brittney Mendoza (24), and Michelle Grap (23).
- Shaffer has 14 RBIs over her last seven games, and 17 hits and seven multi-hit games over her last 10 games.
- Cahalan had her second five-RBI game of the season. She had six against Drexel on March 9.
- Blantz has a hit in four-straight games - with three of those games being multi-hit games.
- Kerwood won her 19th game of the season, tied with Carolynn Sloat for third most in program history. She only trails Emily Winburn (22, 2024) and Susan Dugan (20, 2000).
- Kerwood has thrown 19.1 consecutive innings without giving up an earned run.
- Delaware's 2-3-4 hitters (Blantz, Shaffer, and Cahalan) went a combined 8-for-10 with two home runs, 10 RBIs, and six runs scored.
- This is Delaware's second 10-game win streak of the season - UD previously won 12-straight games from March 1-18. This is the first time in program history Delaware has had two 10-game winning streaks in one season.
- Delaware is one of seven teams currently on a 10+ game win streak (Grand Canyon - 14, McNeese State - 13, Howard -12, Omaha - 11, Idaho State - 11, and Saint Louis - 10).
- Delaware has stolen 26 bases over its last nine games after having 15 in the first 37 games of the season.
- Delaware has hit three home runs in a game six times this season.
- Over its 10-game win streak, Delaware is hitting .399/.456/.642 as a team with 12 home runs, 22 doubles, four triples, and have gone 24-for-24 in stolen bases.
- Delaware has had at least 10 hits in five consecutive games for the first time since March 30-April 5, 2017.
- Delaware has outscored its opponents 83-8 in its last nine games. UD has also allowed just 28 hits over those eight games.
