RICHMOND, Va. - University of Delaware softball's Sydney Shaffer and Billie Kerwood were named CAA Player of the Week and Co-Pitcher of the Week after their performances against Villanova and Hampton. This is Shaffer's third CAA Weekly Honor of the season and Kerwood's fifth. Shaffer and Kerwood also were named CAA Player and Pitcher of the Week during the season's opening weekend.
Shaffer hit a blistering .636/.733/1.455 during a 4-0 week, with five of her seven hits going for extra bases (three doubles, two home runs) while driving in nine runs and scoring six. Shaffer went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run, two runs scored, and a walk against Villanova on Tuesday, 1-for-3 with a two-run double and a run scored during game one Friday vs Hampton, 1-for 3 with an RBI double and a walk during game two, and 2-for-2 with a walk, hit by pitch, two-run home run, and RBI double during Saturday's win. Her home run on Saturday tied the Delaware single-season program record at 15.
Kerwood fired her first career no-hitter and the 19th in Delaware history on Friday while going 3-0 without allowing an earned run in 10.1 innings. She allowed just three hits and two walks during the week with 18 strikeouts, including her 188th of the season to set a new Delaware program record. She earned the win in relief on Tuesday against Villanova by throwing 2.1 perfect innings with three strikeouts. She struck out eight during her no-hitter, with the only baserunner reaching on a passed ball after a strikeout. In the series finale, she struck out seven in three innings while allowing just three hits and two unearned runs.
In the CAA, Shaffer currently ranks first in home runs (15), on base percentage (.519), slugging percentage (.853), OPS (1.372), and total bases (110), second in runs (41) and RBIs (49), third in average (.411), doubles (12), and walks (26), and fourth in hits (53). She also currently ranks in the top 10 in Delaware single-season history for RBIs, runs scored, total bases, and walks. Shaffer joined Stony Brook's Kyra McFarland as the only CAA players this season with three Player of the Week honors.
Kerwood is leading the conference in wins (19), strikeouts (195), ERA (1.73), innings pitched (154), and BAA (.194) and is second in complete games (9) and shutouts (3). She also ranks third in Delaware history for single-season wins, trailing only Emily Winburn (22, 2024) and Susan Dugan (20, 2000). Kerwood's five CAA Weekly Honors are the most for a CAA pitcher since Winburn had five in 2023.
Delaware has earned a CAA Weekly Honor in all but one week it has played in, and has had five players honored so far this season (Sydney Shaffer and Kerwood - Feb. 11, Gianna Costaro - Feb. 25, Josie Crossman - March 4, Morgan Hess - March 11, Kerwood - March 18, Shaffer - March 24, Kerwood - April 14). Its 11 honors are the most in the conference and four more than Campbell's seven honorees. Delaware is back in action Wednesday night against Maryland for its final non-conference game of the season before taking on Monmouth for its final road CAA series.
