Shaffer Sets Single-Season Home Run Record, Kerwood Strikes Out 15 in Softball's 5-1 Win Over Monmouth

HEN HIGHLIGHTS
- Kerwood pitched all seven innings, allowing just three hits and one run with the 15 strikeouts.Â
- Shaffer went 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs, and a walk.Â
- Morgan Hess went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.Â
- Chloe Blantz had two hits and two runs scored.Â
- Katie Scheivert doubled and scored a run.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Shaffer hit a two-run home run in the first inning, her 16th of the season, to set the single-season program record and give Delaware a 2-0 lead.Â
- Kerwood struck out the side in the first inning.Â
- After Monmouth got a run back in the bottom of the second, Hess doubled in Blantz in the third inning to give Delaware a 3-1 lead.Â
- Kerwood struck out three more in the third and two in the fourth.Â
- Hess doubled in another run in the fifth inning to give UD a 4-1 lead.Â
- Kerwood had three more strikeouts in the sixth inning.Â
- Shaffer hit her second home run in the seventh inning to put the Blue Hens ahead 5-1.Â
- Kerwood worked a perfect inning in the seventh, striking out two more to seal the win.Â
GAME NOTES
- Shaffer broke the single-season home run record of 15 that was set by Mariah Kondravy in 2015 and Anna Steinmetz in 2016.Â
- Shaffer also set a new program single-season record for total bases with 119, moving past Kondravy's 117 in 2015.Â
- Shaffer drove in her 47th run of the season (second most in program history), scored her 43rd run of the season (third most in program history), and drew her 28th walk of the season (fifth most in program history).Â
- Shaffer moved into a tie with Allison Borchers for 10th place on the all-time Delaware RBI list with 92 and with Lara Andrews for 10th place on the all-time Delaware walk list with 68.Â
- Shaffer's 17 home runs are the most in the CAA since 2019.Â
- Shaffer has three multi-home run games this season. She's the only player with two multi-home run games against CAA opponents.Â
- Kerwood's 15 strikeouts were tied for the second most ever in a game in program history and tied for the most ever in a CAA game. Kiersten Coffman struck out 17 against Morgan State on March 30, 2016 and Lindsay Jones struck out 15 in a CAA game against George Mason on March 25, 2006.Â
- Kerwood's previous career high in strikeouts was 13, done last year as a member of Monmouth on Feb. 25 against Akron.Â
- Kerwood extended her program record for strikeouts in a single-season, and became the first Blue Hen to ever strike out 200 in a year.Â
- Kerwood's 15 strikeouts equaled the most by a CAA pitcher this season (McKenna McCard, April 18, 2025 vs N.C. A&T).Â
- Kerwood became the third pitcher in program history to win 20 games in a season, joining Emily Winburn (22, 2024) and Susan Dugan (20, 2000).Â
- Kerwood has allowed just one earned run in her last six games - spanning 25.1 innings. She has also won her last eight decisions in the circle.
- Hess had her second three-hit game of the season.Â
- Blantz scored her 99th run of her career.Â
- Scheivert has scored a run in eight consecutive games.Â
- Delaware has won eight consecutive conference games.Â
- Delaware is now up to 50 home runs this season, the most by a CAA team since James Madison hit 66 in 2022.Â
