RICHMOND, Va. - University of Delaware softball's Morgan Hess was named CAA Co-Player of the Week after helping Delaware to a 3-1 week, the conference announced on Monday. This is Hess' second honor this season and the fourth of her career. Â
Hess hit .500/.500/.750 and pitched to a 2.86 ERA, including a no-hitter against Monmouth on Saturday. Hess had six hits in 12 at bats, including three doubles. She went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs on Friday against Monmouth and 2-for-3 with a double on Saturday before singling on Sunday. She struck out six hitters in five innings during her no-hitter.Â
Hess is hitting .351/.425/.603 with eight doubles, seven home runs, 31 RBIs, and 32 runs scored this season and is 9-5 with a 2.57 ERA in the circle. In the CAA, she ranks first in shutouts, third in BAA, fifth in home runs and wins, seventh in total bases, eighth in OPS, ninth in SLG and complete games, and 10th in RBIs. In 24 CAA-only games, Hess is hitting .417/.457/.764 with six home runs and has a 2.12 ERA and is 5-1.Â
Hess' no-hitter was the second of her career and the 20th in Delaware history. She became the third player in program history with multiple no-hitters in a Delaware career, joining Kristi O'Connell, who threw five, and Patty Freeman, who threw three. It was Delaware's second no-hitter this season, as Billie Kerwood no-hit Hampton on April 18. This is the first time since 2000 in which Delaware has thrown multiple no-hitters in one season. Delaware is the only team in the CAA with multiple no-hitters this season.Â
Delaware has earned a CAA Weekly Honor in all but one week it has played in, and has had five players honored so far this season (Sydney Shaffer and Kerwood - Feb. 11, Gianna Costaro - Feb. 25, Josie Crossman - March 4, Morgan Hess - March 11, Kerwood - March 18, Shaffer - March 24, Kerwood - April 14, Shaffer and Kerwood -April 21). Its 12 honors are the most in the conference and five more than Campbell's seven honorees. With Charleston sweeping Campbell, and UNCW taking a game from Elon, Delaware sits in first place in the CAA at 20-4 with three games remaining. Elon is 19-5, and Delaware holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Phoenix, and Campbell is 18-6.Â
