Hess Leads Softball Past Towson, 4-0, on Senior Day

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware softball's Morgan Hess celebrated Senior Day by shutting out Towson, 4-0, all while driving in all four runs of the game. The Blue Hens have won 13-straight CAA games and 23 conference games overall, the most all-time by a CAA team. After the game, Delaware honored its five-person senior class - Chloe Blantz, Graceyn Frost, Billie Kerwood, Mary Beth Cahalan, and Hess.Â

- Hess pitched all seven innings, allowing just four hits. She also went 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs.Â
- Blantz went 2-for-3 with a run scored and stolen base.Â
- Sydney Shaffer walked two times.Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- Shaffer threw a runner out at second base on an attempted stolen base to help Hess through a hitless first inning.Â
- Delaware broke out in the second inning after Blantz and Shaffer reached base to start the frame, as Hess doubled off the wall for the first runs of the game.Â
- Hess pitched a 1-2-3 fourth with a strikeout.Â
- Hess then added insurance runs in the fifth with her second two-run double of the game. After another Shaffer walk and a Towson error, she and pinch runner Ellie Mulligan came around to score to give Delaware a 4-0 lead.Â
- Hess struck out another hitter in a hitless sixth before finishing off the game in the seventh.Â
GAME NOTES
- Hess pitched her CAA-leading sixth shutout of the season and third in CAA play. Her six shutouts are the eighth most in a season in program history.Â
- Against Towson for her career, Hess hit .500/.545/1.150Â (10-for-20) with three home runs, three doubles, 11Â RBIs, and six runs scored while pitching to a 0.66 ERA (two earned runs in 21 innings pitched) and allowing just 12 hits.Â
- Blantz extended her career-best hit streak to 11. She is hitting .512/.524/.659 over the streak with 21 hits and seven multi-hit games.Â
- Shaffer upped her walk total for the season to 34, tied with Mandy Welch (2002) for third most in program history.
- Delaware recorded its 18th shutout of the season, one shy of tying the single-season record set in 2000. It's the most by a CAA team since James Madison had 28 in 2017.Â
- Delaware's pitching staff set a new program record for strikeouts in a season at 334, moving past the previous record of 330 in 2006.Â
- Delaware has won 23 conference games, the most in the CAA in the league's history.Â
- Delaware's 13-game conference win streak is the fifth longest active streak in Division I, only behind Grand Canyon (17), Howard (15), McNeese (15), and Marist (14).Â
- Over its 13-game conference win streak, Delaware is hitting .391/.444/.637 with 109 runs scored and 16 home runs while pitching to a 1.09 ERA with just 16 runs allowed. Â
- Delaware has won six-straight games against Towson, its longest streak against the Tigers since winning seven-straight from 1983-1986. Â

- Delaware will play its first CAA Tournament game at noon on Thursday against the winner of Wednesday's No. 4 seed and No 5 seed.
