BOSTON – The University of Delaware ice hockey team had a trio of student-athletes recognized as American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA)/Krampade Division I All-American Scholars, as announced by the organization this week. Kaitlin Finnegan, Danica Mark, and Charlotte Payne all earned the honor after stellar years in the classroom.
To qualify a student-athlete must have attained a 3.75 GPA for each semester and had to appear in 40% of the team's games. Exceptions were granted to injured players and back-up goalies. Schools also were required to be members of the AHCA.
405 men and 320 women were named All-American Scholars in the 10th addition of the award.
Finnegan, who was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team in June, received a certificate in strategic leadership from Delaware this spring with a 3.83 GPA. Finnegan led the Fightin' Blue Hens in their inaugural season, finishing with a team-leading 13 points on a team-high eight goals and five assists. She also finished second on the team with 68 blocked shots, which ranked second nationally among forwards. The co-captain was the recipient of the AHA Individual Sportsmanship Award and was selected to the AHA All-Academic Team.
Mark, an economics major, registered a 3.90 GPA in her first year in the Blue & Gold. She finished the season with three goals, tying for the team lead with two power play tallies. She scored her first Delaware goal at RIT in December, and found the back of the net in back-to-back games at Lindenwood in January. Mark was selected to the AHA All-Academic Team.
Payne registered a 4.0 GPA as a mathematics & data science major to earn AHA Student-Athlete of the Year honors, one of 21 recipients in the conference. The freshman goaltender appeared in 20 games last season for the Blue Hens, posting a .914 save percentage and a 3.80 GAA with a team-leading with 802 saves. She had 11 games with at least 40 saves, including a season-high 51 saves twice and 49 saves to pick up her first collegiate win against Holy Cross.
