Zach Haupt, a former standout track and field athlete at McKendree College, is entering his first year as an assistant coach for the Blue Hens with 10 years of collegiate coaching experience.Â
While at McKendree, Haupt was a four-time All-American selection and won the award for Most Valuable Field Athlete during the 1997-98 season. In addition, he was a qualifier for the 1996 Olympic Trials.Â
He got his coaching start at Syracuse Univeristy where he spent one season from 2000-2001 before heading back to his alma mater for a year. After 2002, Haupt took a three-year hiatis only to return to coach at McKendree for another two years from 2005-2007.Â
After leaving McKendree, Haupt spent two years at Webster University from 2008-2010, and one year at Central Arkansas from 2010-2011. He then moved on to MIT where he spent two years as the short sprints and jumps coach, and strength and conditiong coach. While at MIT, Haupt coached three freshman school record holders, along with three conference champions and five All-Conference honorees.Â
Haupt's last and most recent stop was at Lynchburg College, where he was the head coach for two seasons. Haupt led the Hornets to a very successful 2014 season. He led the indoor track and field team to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title which helped earn him a Coach of the Year award. In addition, he coached the national champion in the 200-meter race in indoor competition. His outdoor team also won the 2014 ODAC crown which helped earn him the conference Coach of the Year honor. In 2015, the indoor and outdoor men's teams both had second-place finishes at the ODAC meet.Â
Overall, Haupt had a very successful couple of years at Lycnhburg. He coached six school record holers, four national qualifiers, and the 400-meter national champion, while earning the Coach of the Year honor twice.Â
Haupt comes to Delaware with his wife, Julie and two kids, Quentin and Sophia.
