| University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2018 |
Volleyball Head Coach (1972) | Women’s Basketball Head Coach (1969-70) | Assistant Director of Recreation & Intramurals (1966-73)
One of the true pioneers of UD women’s athletics, Susana Occhi served as the Blue Hens’ first volleyball and basketball coach.
A native of Argentina, Susana served as Delaware’s volleyball head coach in 1972 and led the squad to an 18-13 record and a spot in the EAIAW eastern regionals, setting the foundation for a program that has won seven conference titles and made eight national tournament appearances.
She served as coach of the volleyball club team for two seasons before the program earned varsity status. She also served as head coach of the first UD basketball team in 1969-70.
For seven years, Susana served as Delaware’s assistant director of recreation and intramurals and was responsible for organizing intramurals for women and co-ed. The UD Women's Recreation Association was created, resulting in the organization of "sports days" with other schools - the forerunner to the women's athletics program.
She earned her master’s degree from UD in 1970 and later coached men’s and women’s volleyball at Princeton, coached the Argentina National Team, and served at the NCAA office.
