Kevin Cataldo, a track & field standout at Oakland University who served on the staffs at both Michigan State and Butler, was named the new assistant women’s cross country and track & field coach at the University of Delaware in August, 2014.
Cataldo will work closely with head coach Wendy McFarlane with the cross country squad and will direct the Blue Hen distance runners during the upcoming indoor and outdoor track & field seasons. He has three years of collegiate coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.
“I am very excited to have Coach Cataldo on board here at the University of Delaware,” said McFarlane, the 2014 Colonial Athletic Association Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year who led the UD outdoor team to the 2014 CAA title. “He is a good fit for our team and the University culture. I know we will work well together as we continue to build a more successful cross country and track and field program.”
A native of Michigan, Cataldo earned his degree in health sciences and pre-physical therapy from Oakland (Mich.) University in 2011 and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in education, sports leadership, and coaching.
He was a standout runner for the cross country team and an accomplished distance runner for the track & field squads at Oakland between 2006-11. He was named to the All-Michigan Team at the Michigan Intercollegiate Cross Country meet in 2010.
He began his coaching career at Michigan State University where he served as a volunteer men’s and women’s assistant on head coach Walt Drenth’s staff for two seasons in 2011-13.
While at MSU, he helped the men’s cross country team qualify for the NCAA Championships in 2012 and helped lead the Spartan women to the Big Ten cross country team title in 2011 and NCAA Championships berths in both 2011 and 2012.
During his tenure, track & field standout Leah O’Connor won two Big Ten steeplechase titles and was the 2013 champion in the outdoor 5,000 meters and Sara Kroll won the 2012 Big Ten cross country individual championship.
Cataldo moved on to Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind. last season and served as an assistant on head coach Matt Roe’s men’s and women’s cross country and track & field staff.
During the 2013-14 season, the Butler men and women both placed third in the team standings at the Big East championships while the women finished third overall as a team at the NCAA Championships after placing as the runner-up at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
