Blue Hen Men's Golfers Conclude Fall Season With 15th Place Finish at ODU Outer Banks Collegiate Invitational

POWELLS POINT, N.C. -- The University of Delaware men's golf team wrapped up its 2011 fall season this week with a 15th place finish out of 18 teams at the ODU Outer Banks Collegiate Invitational.
The Blue Hens recorded a 306 team score during Tuesday's third and final round to finish in 15th place at 903. No. 28 Georgia captured the team title with an 834 team score, while 37th-ranked Liberty finished just three shots behind at 837. Host Old Dominion came in third at 870, while Winthrop was fourth at 873 and George Washington finished fifth at 875.
Delaware junior Ben Conroy (at right)again led the Blue Hens on Tuesday with a one over par 73 on the par 72, 6,559-yard Kilmaric Golf Course, finishing in a tie for 26th place in the individual standings with a four over par 74-73-73-220. Conroy was three over par through seven holes during his final round, but birdied 9 and 12 while recording pars on the other nine final holes to finish the day at one over.
Senior Stephen Scialo fired a four over par 76 on Tuesday, tying for 44th place with an eight over par score of 73-75-76-224. After a two over par front nine, Scialo posted three consecutive pars before a birdie on 13 to move to one over for the day. However he bogeyed three of the final five holes to conclude his day at four over.
Fellow senior Greg Matthias recorded a nine over par 81 during his final round and finished in a tie for 65th place at 73-76-81-230, 14 over par. Matthias was six over par through 10 holes, but responded with birdies on 11 and 12 to move to four over. However three bogeys and a double bogey the rest of the day put him at nine over for the round.
Playing in his first tournament of the fall, sophomore Dan Costenbader fired a six over par 78 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 69th place with a 15 over par 75-78-78-231. Costenbader was three over on both the front and back nine during his final round, with his lone birdie coming on the 12th hole.
Sophomore Corey Wagner carded a seven over par 79 during his final round and ended the tournament tied for 81st place with a 25 over par score of 83-79-79-241. Wagner parred his first five holes of the day, and was still just two over through 12. However he bogeyed five of his final six holes to finish the round at seven over.
T.J. Mitchell of Georgia led the entire tournament and went on to earn medalist honors with a 15 under par 64-70-67-201, edging second place Robert Karlsson of Liberty by two strokes.
The tournament concludes the fall season for the Blue Hens, who claimed the Navy Fall Classic team title and finished among the top 10 in two other tournaments.
