Delaware Men's Golfers Claim Navy Fall Classic Team Title; Ben Conroy Finishes Second in Individual Standings

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The University of Delaware men's golf team recorded a 284 team score Sunday and finished with a two-day score of 570 to claim the Navy Fall Classic team title, earning the tiebreaker over Lafayette.
The Blue Hens entered the day three shots behind the Leopards but finished three strokes better during Sunday's second and final round to defend the Navy Fall Classic title they also won last year. The team victory was Delaware's first since the Blue Hens took the Villanova Wildcat Invitational on April 3-4 of this year.
Delaware trailed Lafayette by one shot near the end of the day but the Blue Hens' final golfer, sophomore Corey Wagner, birdied the par-4 18th hole to force the tiebreaker. Both teams then sent all five players to the eighth hole, and after Lafayette posted two bogeys while Delaware recorded just one, the Blue Hens captured the title.
St. Francis (Pa.) finished third in the 12-team field with a 583 score, Navy “Gold” was fourth at 584, and Navy “White” and Brown tied for fifth at 592.
The Blue Hens were paced by junior Ben Conroy (at right) who fired a three under par 68 on Sunday on the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club's par 71, 6,528-yard course, the lowest score on the day. Conroy finished in second place in the individual standings with a three-under par 71-68-139, just one shot behind medalist August Jonas of Navy, who carded a four under par 69-69-138.
Wagner concluded his impressive weekend with an even par 71 on Sunday, finishing in fourth place after carding a one under par 70-71-141. Senior Stephen Scialo was the second Blue Hen to shoot under par on Sunday, as he fired a one under 70 and finished in a tie for 10th place at 73-70-143, one over par.
UD freshman Fraser Graham shot a four over par 75 during his second round, finishing with a five over par 72-75-147 to tie for 19th place. Senior Greg Matthias also came in at four over par 75 on Sunday, as he finished in a tie for 32nd place with a nine over par 76-75-151.
Playing as an individual, junior J.R. Fasy carded a five over par 76 during his final round to finish tied for 23rd at 72-76-148, six over par. Freshman Niño Rosal also played as an individual, firing a seven over par 78 on Sunday and finishing tied for 38th with a 10 over par 74-78-152.
Delaware will take next weekend off before returning to action on Sept. 24-25 when the Blue Hens compete in the Cornell Invitational at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course in Ithaca, N.Y.
