Delaware Women's Rowing Team Opens Exhibition Season at Navy Day Regatta with Top 10 Finishes

PHILADELPHIA -- The University of Delaware women's rowing team opened its 2012 fall exhibition schedule Saturday with competition at the Navy Day Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
Delaware teams placed third in the Novice Fours race, fifth in the Novice Eights, sixth in the Novice Eights, and sixth in the Varsity Eights.
“It was a fun day of racing and a solid start to the season,” said first-year head coach Kevin Gruber. “Each crew rowed an aggressive, intelligent race. Certainly there is room for improvement, but I was very happy with the efforts and attitudes today.”
Delaware's top finish came in the Novice Fours where the team of coxswain Sarah Tenebaum, Lauren Bacher, Naomi Balodemas, Erin Dunne, and Alexandra Cruz finished third with a time of 18:17.93. Pennsylvania won the race in 17:03.92.
In the Novice Eights race, Delaware's B team of coxswain Molly Gardner, Shannon Bell, Danielle Lawler, Erin Dunne, Kaitlin Flood, Rachel Boudart, Jenny Kohler, Angela Quinn, and Meredith Murphy was fifth in a time of 15:31.13 while the Delaware A team of coxswain Hayley Diverio, Lily Guttentag, Alexandra Cruz, Corey Holloway, Naomi Balodemas, Jennifer Majcher, Bethany Porter, Calla Cissel, and Denise Cirelli was sixth in a time of 15:55.48. Navy won the race in a time of 14:53.19.
In the Varsity Eights race, the Blue Hen team of coxswain Jamie Noce, Alex Smart, Shannon Taylor, Ally Crossman, Yardley Markee, Catherine Manner, Bethany Callaway, Sarah Slotoroff, and Holly Dodge finished sixth in a time of 15:28.04. Navy won the race in a time of 14:50.36.
Delaware will continue exhibition action at the Head of the Occoquan Regatta at the Occoquan River in Fairfax, Va.
