Blue Hen Men's Golfers Wrap Up Fall Season By Finishing Ninth at ODU Outer Banks Intercollegiate

POWELLS POINT, N.C. -- The University of Delaware men's golf team carded its lowest round of the ODU Outer Banks Intercollegiate by posting a 294 on Tuesday and wrapped up its fall season by finishing in ninth place out of 18 teams at the tournament.
The Blue Hens, who fired a 303 on Sunday before improving to 298 on Monday, finished with a three-round score of 895. Georgia Southern claimed the team title with an 854 score, while Richmond finished second at 866 and the host Monarchs were third at 868. Radford came in fourth at 869, while George Mason finished fifth with an 875 score.
Delaware freshman Braden Shattuck carded a four over par 76 during his final round on the par 72, 6,560-yard course at Kilmarlic Golf Club, finishing in a tie for 18th place in the individual standings with a three over par 72-71-76-219. Shattuck birdied the fourth hole and was even par through five, before birdies on seven and nine put him at two under through the front nine. He slipped to five over for the day through 16, before a par and a birdie closed his round at four over.
UD senior Ben Conroy fired a two over par 74 on Tuesday to tie for 27th place at 73-75-74-222, six over par. Conroy was three over par through the front nine but rallied with six pars and birdies on 11 and 16 on the back nine, before a bogey on 18 ended his day at two over.
Junior Dan Costenbader carded a three over par 75 during his final round, finishing in a tie for 47th place with a 12 over par score of 78-75-75-228. Costenbader was six over through seven holes, but birdied eight and had a par on nine to end the front nine at five over. He then recorded pars on eight holes while posting an eagle on 12 during an impressive two under par back nine.
Freshman Kyle Martin recorded a two over par 74 on Tuesday, ending the tournament in a tie for 56th place at 80-77-74-231, 15 over par. Martin was three over par through the front nine, and dropped to four over through 12. However he bounced back with four pars and birdies on 15 and 18 to close his round at two over par.
Sophomore Niño Rosal (at right) had the best round of a day by a Blue Hen, carding a one under par 71 to finish tied for 64th place with a 19 over par 81-83-71-235. Rosal was two over par through seven holes, but birdied eight and nine to move to even par through the front nine. Rosal continued his impressive play on the back nine with eight consecutive pars, before a birdie on 18 ended his round at one under.
Weston Eklund of Radford and Scott Wolfes of Georgia Southern tied for the individual lead at nine under par, with Wolfes earning medalist honors by winning a one-hole playoff.
The tournament concludes the 2012 fall season for the Blue Hens, who posted a pair of top five finishes and placed among the top 10 in four of their five invitationals.
