NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware men's golf head coach Mike Keogh (at right) has announced that high school standouts Cody Dazen and Evan Thornton will join the Blue Hen program in the fall of 2013.
Dazen, who attends St. Augustine Prep in Shamong, N.J., was an All-State selection in 2011 and 2012, and finished first in Non Public “A” in the 2012 New Jersey State Tournament of Champions. He won the 2012 Cape Atlantic League individual medal and the New Jersey Carl Arena/Al Rifkin Tournament, becoming only the second player to win both events in the same year.
The 2012 Press of Atlantic City Player of the Year, Dazen was also selected Player of the Year in each of the last two years by The Daily Journal and Camden Courier-Post. He averaged 35.2 shots per nine holes as a junior and shot a career-low round of 32, both St. Augustine records.
Dazen has posted four top 25 finishes and five top 10 qualifiers on the AJGA Tour, including a win in the AJGA Ravenwood Junior Championship Qualifier. He also captured the 2012 New Jersey PGA Championship At RoyceBrook with a scoring record of four under par 212.
Thornton, who attends Wyomissing (Pa.) High School, was a first team All-State honoree last season as a junior. He served as team captain of Wyomissing last year, leading the school to the 2012 Class AA state championship. Thornton advanced to the Pennsylvania State Championship in each of the last three years, finishing 11th in 2011 and sixth in 2012.
A three-time Berks County Interscholastic Athletic Association Player of the Year, Thornton posted the lowest average in the BCIAA in 2012 with a 69.1 average round. He was the 2012 champion at the IJGT Hershey Classic with a 74-74, and was the runner up at the 2012 GAP Junior Championship.
Thornton finished second in the 2012 GAP Junior Player of the Year, and posted a second place finish in 2011 and a fourth place finish in 2012 at the Christman Cup.
