NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Former University of Delaware golfer Joey McLister won a Monday Qualifier for the Zurich Classic and will compete in his first ever PGA TOUR event this weekend.
McLister, who has also been playing on the egolf Professional Tour, fired a five under par 67 to earn medalist honors at LaTour Golf Club in Mathews, La. He defeated notables such as Frank Lickliter, Kenny Perry and two-time U.S. Open winner Lee Janzen to become the first Blue Hen golfer to qualify for a PGA TOUR event.
The Zurich Classic will be held Thursday through Sunday at TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La., just outside of New Orleans. The first and second rounds of the tournament begin at 7 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, with live coverage on Golf Channel from 2-5 p.m. each day. Saturday and Sunday rounds start at approximately 7:30 a.m., and will be televised live by Golf Channel from 12 noon-1:30 p.m. and by CBS from 2-5 p.m.
2012 Masters champion Bubba Watson will participate in the tournament, along with Ernie Els, Rickie Fowler, Justin Leonard and Graeme McDowell.
McLister, a first team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection in 2006, is one of the top players in Delaware golf history. His 74.66 career average round is the second lowest in school history, while he posted the lowest average round on the Blue Hens during all four of his seasons. His 72.85 round average in 2005-06 and his 73.69 average in 2006-07 still rank second and third, respectively, in UD history.
