Matthias Tied For Third Place, Blue Hens Eighth Following First Day of CAA Men's Golf Championships

72 during his first round on the par 71, 7,043-yard South Course at Wilmington Country Club to end the day in a tie for third place. Marc Dobias of VCU leads the standings after firing a one under par 70, Damon Stephenson of Georgia State carded an even par 71, while Matthias and Payne McLeod of UNCW are two shots back.
Starting on the 10th tee, Matthias recorded consecutive birdies on 15 and 16 to put him one under for the round. He then bogeyed 17 and 18, but quickly rebounded to birdie 1 to get back to even for the day. Back-to-back birdies on 5 and 6 put Matthias at one under for the round, before bogeys on 8 and 9 ended his day at 35-37-72 as he tied for the lowest round of his season.
Junior Ben Conroy carded an eight over par 79 during his opening round, ending the day in a tie for 28th place. Conroy was two over through three holes, but three pars and a birdie on 15 moved him to one over for the round. Four consecutive bogeys and a double bogey dropped him to seven over for the day, before he responded with two pars and a birdie on 6 to improve to six over. However Conroy ended his round with bogeys on 8 and 9, finishing his round at 49-39-79.
Senior Stephen Scialo fired a nine over par 80 on Friday and is tied for 38th place in the standings heading into the second round. Scialo was just one over through the back nine, which featured seven pars and a birdie on 17. However he recorded six bogeys and a double bogey on 5 during his front nine to end the day at 43-37-80.
Freshman Niño Rosal enters Saturday's second round in a tie for 41st place after he fired a 10 over par 81 during his opening round. Rosal was just one over through six holes, before a double bogey on 16 followed by consecutive bogeys put him at five over halfway through. He was still five over following birdies on 2 and 5, but closed his round with three bogeys and a double bogey to finish at 40-41-81.
Sophomore Dan Costenbader carded a 12 over par 83 during his opening round and is tied for 50th place in the standings. Costenbader birdied 13 and was one over through 14, before two pars and two bogeys put him three over through the back nine. However Costenbader had four bogeys and two double bogeys during his front nine, ending the day at 44-39-83.
The CAA Championships continue Saturday with a 9 a.m. start at the Wilmington Country Club.
