ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Delaware senior Greg Matthias fired a seven over par 78 on Thursday during his opening round at the NCAA Men's Golf Ann Arbor Regional and is tied for 60th place following the first round of the three-day tournament.
Matthias carded a 42-36-78 on the par 71, 6,723-yard University of Michigan Golf Course during his first ever NCAA appearance. He opened his round with a bogey, but quickly rebounded to par the second hole and birdie the third to move back to even par for the day. However four bogeys and a double bogey moved him to six over through the front nine. Matthias then responded with eight pars and a bogey on 12, finishing the back nine at just one over.
Julien Brun of TCU, Joakim Mikkelsen of Baylor, and Anthony Paolucci of USC are each tied for the individual lead as all three players fired a four under par 67 during their opening round.
TCU leads the 13-team field after recording a 278 team score on Thursday, while Kent State sits in second place at 286. Kennesaw State and Virginia are each tied for third at 287, while Oregon is fifth at 288.
Matthias, the 11th Blue Hen golfer in UD history to compete in the NCAA Tournament, will begin his second round on Friday at 9:50 a.m. on the 10th tee. He will be paired with Tim Shield of Navy and Tyler Merkel of Ball State.
