University of Delaware Golfer Greg Matthias Named CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Men's Golf

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware men's golf standout Greg Matthias, who captured the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association individual title back in April and earned his degree in May, has been selected as the 2012 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's golf.
Matthias (at right), a native of Wilmington, Del. (Salesianum School), was one of 11 student-athletes honored for their academic and athletic accomplishments during the spring athletics season.
Throughout the athletics season, one student-athlete from each CAA sport is recognized as that sport's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote of sports information directors from league member schools. Nominees must carry a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average, be a sophomore or older, and be a starter or key reserve for their team.
Matthias is the second Delaware student-athlete to be honored by the CAA as Scholar-Athlete of the Year during the 2011-12 season as Elena Delle Donne was recognized for women's basketball earlier this year. He is also the third player in UD history to be honored as the conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Jim Riley (1988, 1989) and Graig O'Brien (1999).
Matthias, who earned his degree in sport management with a minor in leadership from Delaware last month, was a Dean's List student a member of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll during his career.
A four-year letterwinner, Matthias earned medalist honors at the 2012 CAA Men's Golf Championships at Wilmington (Del.) Country Club after shooting a 4-over-par 217 over 54 holes to win by one shot. He went on to compete at the NCAA Regionals at the University of Michigan where he finished 67th overall.
He finished his senior season with a 76.7 stroke average and recorded nine career Top 10 tournament finishes during his career.
In addition to Matthias, other individual sport award recipients were Zach Fischer (baseball) of Towson, Victor Valente (men's tennis) and Charlotte Lorentzen (women's golf) of Georgia State, Andrew Gvozden (men's lacrosse), Jill Maier (women's lacrosse), and Olivia Galati (softball) of Hofstra, Greta Haselmann (rowing) of Northeastern, Christina Lee (women's tennis) of UNCW, Brandon Heroux (men's outdoor track & field) of William & Mary, and Katie Harman (women's outdoor track & field) of James Madison.
