NEWARK, Del. – Backed by two goals from freshman Guillermo Delgado, the University of Delaware men's soccer team won it's season-opening contest against UNLV Friday evening, 3-1 at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The game marked the first meeting ever between the two schools.
The Blue Hens scored the opening goal of the contest just 16:52 into the first half when senior Roberto Gimenez found freshman Delgado for his first career goal. Sophomore Joe Dipre also tallied an assist on the score.
Less than 30 minutes later, Delgado found the net again to put the Hens up, 2-0. Senior Luke Oostdyk registered the only assist on the second Delaware goal.
UNLV scored in the 72nd minute to come within one of Delaware, but five minutes later senior defender Kyle Bruno scored after passes from Gimenez and Dipre to add to the Delaware advantage.
Transfer goaltender Borja Barbero, who played last season at Iona, earned his first victory as a Blue Hen, allowing just one goal on seven shots.
Ian Hennessy“It felt really great to score two goals in my first game," said Delgado, a native of Tres Cantos, Spain. " I was nervous to start the game, so to come out and score two goals makes me really happy. We've worked hard as a group and the two goals I scored were thanks to my mates. We have a lot of chemistry as a team. The midfielders connect well with the strikers, the defense made great plays, and our keeper was really vocal. I think we are going to do great things this year.”
