Delaware Suffers 1-0 Defeat to Towson Friday in CAA Matchup

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's soccer fell to Towson 1-0 Friday night in a Colonial Athletic Association game at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The Blue Hens (6-8-1, 2-3-1 CAA) controlled much of the game, but Towson's Katie Ponce was able to score the decisive goal at the 68:08 mark to give the Tigers their first CAA victory of the season.
Delaware outshot Towson 19-6, but Towson goalkeeper Erin Quinn made several great saves to keep the Blue Hens off the board. Quinn recorded a total of six saves in the winning effort.
Scott GrzendaAndi Arnold and Rachel Vaccaro led Delaware with four shots each on the night, while four other Blue Hens registered at least two shots in the game.
For Towson (4-8-3, 1-4-1), Nicole Nicholas tallied two shots, while four other Tigers recorded one shot each.
“We came into tonight feeling good about the way we had practiced,” said Delaware junior Emily Market. “We has good chances tonight, but we just have to find a way to finish and get some more goals.”
Friday's contest was the first time Delaware has lost to Towson since falling to the Tigers 2-1 in 2009. The 1-0 defeat was the first time UD has lost to Towson at home since 2000 and the first time the Tigers had shutout the Blue Hens since 2007.
Delaware's defeat snaps a four-game home conference winning streak dating back to last season.
The Blue Hens will return to action Sunday as UD hosts James Madison in the final home game of the season. Delaware will honor seniors Andi Arnold, Rachel Vaccaro, Jess Figueroa, and Allegra Gray in a pregame ceremony.
The Blue Hens will also be celebrating 25 years of Delaware women's soccer at halftime with over 40 alumni coming back to take part in the celebration. The matchup between the Blue Hens and Dukes is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
