Swann?s Effort Not Enough as Delaware Volleyball Falls to Hofstra, 3-1

NEWARK, Del. -- Three Hofstra players reached double figure digs as the Pride volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory over the University of Delaware Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The CAA-leading Pride, which won its third consecutive match to improve to 22-3 overall and 10-1 in the conference, took the contest by set scores of 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 25-15. The Blue Hens dropped their second straight while falling to 12-13 overall and 5-5 in league play.
Nuria Lopes da Silva paced Hofstra with 18 kills, while Emily Burke added 14 and Kelsie Wills chipped in 12 for the night. Corrina Delgadillo made a match-high 23 digs, while Wills had 16 for the Pride.
Blue Hen sophomore Alexa Swann paced the UD effort with 13 kills against just three attack errors, as she hit .417 during the contest. Junior Katie Hillman added nine kills and eight digs, while classmate Chandler Bryant contributed eight kills.
Taylor Hollingsworth had 14 digs for Delaware, while Swann and Jill Meyers each recorded six blocks. Autumn Jenkins chipped in with 12 digs and three blocks, while Julia Anderson handed out 33 assists.
The Pride used an 8-2 spurt in the first set to take a 15-10 lead and did not trail from there. The Blue Hens pulled within a point at 22-21 following a Meyers kill, but Hofstra responded with three straight points to take the opening set.
Delaware won five of the first six points during the second game, and the Blue Hens eventually went up by as many as six at 16-10. However the Pride pulled even at 20-20 before taking the set minutes later on an attack error by Jenkins.
UD again roared out to an early lead in the third frame and never trailed during the stanza. Hofstra closed within 22-20 late, but Meyers and Swann combined on a pair of blocks that gave the Blue Hens the set.
Delaware continued its momentum by winning the first five points of the fourth set, and the Blue Hens were still up 8-3 early on. However the Pride exploded by taking 14 of the next 16 points, going in front by seven and never looking back.
