NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men's soccer team lost its second consecutive home game Wednesday as the Blue Hens fell to James Madison 1-0 in a Colonial Athletic Association game at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
James Madison (5-4-2, 1-0 CAA) scored the game-winner with just 7:57 left to play as Josh Grant crossed the ball to Joe Vyner who headed it in from six yards out to give the Dukes the game-winner.
Delaware (8-4, 1-1 CAA), which entered the week ranked No. 8 nationally in scoring with 2.27 goals per game, has scored just one goal in its last three games. The Dukes managed to shutout the Blue Hens and allowed UD a total of just seven shots, including three in the closing seconds as the Blue Hens furiously tried to tie the game. The Hens have now been shutout in consecutive home games for the first time since 2012.
Ian HennessyBefore Wednesday's matchup, Delaware and James Madison had gone to overtime in three of the previous four meetings between the two schools. As the game continued scoreless through much of the night, it looked like the contest was destined for an extra period until Vyner's winning goal.
Following his dramatic game-winning goal against UNCW last Saturday, Guillermo Delgado led UD with three shots on the night while four other Blue Hens tallied one shot each.
“The schedule has a lot of games in a short period of time,” said Delaware junior Joe Dipre. “We may have had some heavy legs tonight, but we have to show up to each game ready to go and focused on winning.”
JMU goalkeeper Kyle Morton registered two saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the year.
Delaware will have a week off before returning to action against Hofstra next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
