BOSTON -- The University of Delaware women's cross country squad didn't get the top three showing that they were looking for, but the Blue Hens put in a solid effort with a fifth place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships held in the rain at Franklin Park Saturday morning.
The Hens, who placed third each of the last two seasons, finished just three points out of fourth place and posted a top five finish at the league meet for the fourth straight year and for the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.
William & Mary won the team title for the third straight year with 35 total points and was followed by league newcomer Elon (46), 2010 and 2011 champion James Madison (84), host Northeastern (118), Delaware (121), College of Charleston (141), Towson (195), UNCW (220), and Hofstra (285) in the nine-team field.
“Although it was rainy and cold, the ladies did not shy away from competing at their best today,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “We were hoping for a third place team finish. Looking at our opponents who were a head of us today, we knew going into the meet that they were going to be hard to beat. I was pleased with our efforts individually but there is still more work to be done as a group. We are a young team, so I am looking for future development as we move forward.”
Delaware senior Katrina Steenkamer (Rising Sun, Md./St. Mark's, Del. HS) led the Blue Hens for the sixth straight meet with a 13th place finish as she covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 21:52.19. She improved 12 spots from her 25th place showing last season. The winning time was put in by William & Mary's Carolyn Hennessy who covered the course in 20:45.35 and won by five seconds.
Also for the Blue Hens, sophomore Betsy Erlanger was 21st (22:21.07), improving 17 spots from last season, freshman Adrienne Fraczkowski was 32nd (22:54.31), finishing eighth among all freshmen in the race, junior Shannon Kelly was 33rd (22:55.00), sophomore Gabrielle Alaimo was 34th (23:01.91), senior Melissa Mazzo was 36th (23:04.39), freshman Liz McGroarty was 52nd (23:45.56), sophomore Becky Gessler was 54th (23:47.88), freshman Madeline Berman was 56th (23:51.95), sophomore Ilana Schnaufer was 62nd (24:12.59), sophomore Melissa Talley was 63rd (24:15.43), and senior Nicole Daly was 66th (24:33.03).
William & Mary men won its 17th straight team title in the men's race with 36 points followed by Northeastern, Elon, College of Charleston, UNCW, and Hofstra.
Delaware will return to action on Friday, Nov. 14, when the Blue Hens take part in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals at Penn State.
