STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford jumped out to an early double figure lead and was never seriously threatened from there as the Cardinal posted an 84-47 men's basketball victory over the University of Delaware Tuesday evening at Maples Pavilion.
Stanford, receiving votes in both of this week's Top 25 polls, improved to 4-1 on the season with its lone loss coming to fourth-ranked Duke. The Blue Hens, again featuring a young rotation including five freshmen and four sophomores, dropped to 0-4 on the campaign.
Cardinal point guard Chasson Randle, a Pac-12 Player of the Year candidate, led Stanford with 15 points and four assists while Rosco Allen, Stefan Nastic and Anthony Brown each chipped in with 12 points apiece. Reid Travis collected a game-high 11 rebounds for the Cardinal, who shot 44.1 percent from the field and held a 49-35 rebounding advantage.
UD guard Cazmon Hayes paced the Blue Hens with 15 points as he reached double figures for the fourth consecutive game, although the sophomore finished just 4 of 21 from the field. Chivarsky Corbett added a season-best 10 points off the bench for Delaware while fellow rookie Kory Holden added eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
Delaware's early season shooting woes continued as the Blue Hens connected on just 18 of 62 field goal attempts to finish with a 29.0 percentage, their fourth straight game under 32 percent.
“The class of shots we were getting was wonderful; we ran our offense well and got the shots we wanted, the shots just weren't going in for us,” said Blue Hen head coach Monté Ross. “But Stanford had a lot to do with that as well, they're going to be a big factor in the Pac-12 Conference. Our guys are fighting their butts off; that's what we have to do and what we'll continue to do.”
Stanford took control early by jumping out to a 12-2 lead, as the Blue Hens hit just one field goal in the opening six and a half minutes before Hayes buried a three-pointer.
Two minutes later another triple by Devonne Pinkard cut the margin to eight, but the Cardinal countered by scoring the game's next 10 points to go in front 26-8 at the 8:18 mark. Stanford led by at least 18 the rest of the stanza, and took a 44-21 advantage into the break when Randle connected on a pair of foul shots in the final seconds.
Stanford then scored the first five points of the second stanza and led by at least 25 points the rest of the way. The margin grew to as much at 40 before a three-point play by Corbett in the final minute closed the scoring.
Delaware will face another stiff challenge on Sunday when the Blue Hens take on 12th-ranked Villanova at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. That game begins at 4:30 p.m. and will be televised by Fox Sports 1.
