BURLINGTON, Vt. – A career-high of 30 points for Courtni Green (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) propelled the University of Delaware women's basketball team to a 68-46 victory over Vermont at Patrick Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Green, who previously tallied a career-best 19 points at Rutgers during the WNIT last March, went 11-for-25 from the floor, with three baskets from behind the arc and five free throws. The junior added eight rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Blue Hens (2-3) snapped a two-game losing streak.
Delaware also saw a career day from senior Stephanie Leon (Northport, N.Y./Northport), who saw just her second-ever start. Leon notched nine points on 3-for-3 shooting with three free throws in addition to six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
Freshman Makeda Nicholas (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) collected a season-high 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for UD while sophomore Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) picked up 11 points and eight rebounds.
Sydney Smith led the Catamounts (0-5) with 14 points and five rebounds. Niki Taylor and Katie Lavelle added six rebounds apiece for Vermont.
[On Courtni Green]: “Courtni is a great shooter and she can score the ball. We needed her to have a breakout game and she did. She had been playing very well before she hurt her knee and was out for those three weeks [during preseason]. She really stepped up today.”
[On game overall]: “This was a good effort defensively, which I've been looking for. There was a lot more talking on the floor. We're a work in progress, but it definitely feels good to win.”
Junior Courtni Green
“Coach [Martin] told us we needed to play defense well, and we've bought into that and some of my points today came from transition so I have to credit my teammates. From the beginning of the season, Coach told me I have to be a scorer and kept telling me to take it to the basket. My shot wasn't falling for a while, so we added another dimension in going to the rack. And I'm glad I have that dimension now.”
