WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team played its final regular season road match of the season Saturday night, posting a decisive three-set victory over William & Mary at Kaplan Arena.
The Blue Hens, who improved to 14-15 overall and evened their CAA mark at 7-7, won the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-23. The Tribe fell to 6-23 overall and 2-12 in the league after dropping its sixth consecutive match.
UD junior Katie Hillman led the offensive attack with a match-high 13 kills, while sophomore Autumn Jenkins celebrated her 19th birthday by adding eight kills and nine digs. Chandler Bryant contributed seven kills against no attack errors as she hit .467 for the night, while the junior also posted a season-high eight blocks.
Taylor Hollingsworth made a match-high 18 digs during the victory, while Julia Anderson dished out 36 assists.
Mallory Brickerd slammed 14 kills for William & Mary, while Dessi Koleva paced the Tribe with 17 digs.
The opening set was tight early on, but the Blue Hens won six consecutive points to go in front 16-8 and cruised from there. Delaware led by as many as 10 points in the frame, before Hillman posted a kill to end the set.
UD never trailed in the second stanza, eventually leading by as many as seven before putting the set away on a kill from Bryant.
The Tribe won two of the first three points in the third frame, but Delaware took the next three and did not trail again. A four-point run increased the UD margin to 15-9, but William & Mary later rallied with five consecutive points to pull even at 20-20. The teams were still tied six points later, before a Hillman kill and an attack error by the Tribe's Liz Brown ended the match.
“It sure is nice to rebound tonight after a tough loss (at JMU),” said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. “We are a team that constantly plays hard and gives great effort almost to a fault, so I am proud we worked together for a road win!”
Delaware, which has already clinched a berth in the upcoming CAA Tournament, wraps up its regular season next weekend by hosting Elon on Friday and UNCW on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
Match Notes:
• Hillman reached double figure kills for the fourth straight match
• Bryant's eight blocks were one shy of her career-high set last year vs. Hofstra
• Alexa Swann and Jill Meyers each had four blocks for UD, which held a 12-7 block advantage
• Delaware went 5-5 in its 10 road matches on the year
