Blue Hens Women's Lacrosse Comes up Short in 11-8 Loss at No. 16 Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Delaware women's lacrosse team held their own for 40 minutes Saturday afternoon against No. 16 Penn, but the Quakers took over in the remaining 20 minutes to post an 11-8 victory at historic Franklin Field.
Sophomore Kara Dattellas (Camillus, N.Y.) wasted no time getting the Blue Hens on the board as she registered an unassisted goal 30 seconds in to take the 1-0 advantage.
Penn countered and tied things just a minute later, but Delaware (1-2) scored three of the game's next four goals to take a 4-2 advantage with 12:47 remaining in the first stanza.
The Quakers (1-0) ended the half with two straight goals to even the game at 4-4.
The two teams traded two goals apiece to open the second half to move the score to 6-6 before Penn rattled off four straight unanswered tallies over the next 15 minutes to take a 10-6 lead.
Caitlin McCartney (Doylestown, Pa.) and senior Chelsea Fay (West Chester, Pa.) each recorded their sixth goals of the season in the waning minutes, but the Quakers held tough to claim the victory.Sophomore Shannon Hawley (Camillus, N.Y.) led Delaware with four points on two goals and a career-best two assists. She added one caused turnover for the Blue Hens.
Dattellas finished the day with three points off of two assists and one goal while Fay collected two points on two goals.
Alex ZaugraLucy Ferguson earned the win for Penn after tallied six saves. Tory Bensen led all scorers with five goals, four of which were off free position attempts.
“This is a disappointing loss because we battled hard with a good opponent and came up short. We wanted to win the first 14 minutes to set the tone for the game and we were successful in doing so. We also wanted to play good team defense and limit their shots, which we did until part way through the second half when they went on a four-goal run. We need to improve our discipline and execution in our transition attack as we had too many unforced errors this afternoon. It's a tough loss, but one we will have to conquer as a team in practice this week.”
Alex Zaugra each tallied two groundballs.
· Duffey also led the team with two caused turnovers.
