STANFORD, Calif. – The season opener didn't go quite as expected for the University of Delaware field hockey squad as No. 12 Stanford shutout the No. 18 Blue Hens, 4-0, at Varsity Turf Friday evening.

The Cardinal (1-0) opened with a quick goal from Maddie Secco off a penalty corner in the sixth minute and Stanford never looked back in the game.

Lauren Becker added two goals for the Cardinal while Fran Tew also collected a score.

UD freshman Emmeline Oltmans (Baarn, The Netherlands/Het Baarnsch Lyceum) made her collegiate debut between the pipes and registered three saves in the loss.

Stanford's Dulcie Davies held the Blue Hens (0-1) scoreless with eight saves for the win.

“ 'Play and learn' is an expression we use a lot and that really sums up our season opener and game experience today. After a first half in which the team seemed to be having difficulties connecting with each other and playing as a team, the majority of the second half was a different story and a great example of how Delaware field hockey can be played. Our learning experience of the entire game and especially the quality performance in the second half today will put us in a much better position to take the next step in our team development and early season growth tomorrow versus Pacific.”

Jacki Coveleski added two for the Hens.
