Blue Hens Women's Tennis Tallies Six Victories on Opening Day

TOWSON, Md. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team kicked off the 2014 fall slate Friday with contests against George Washington, Saint Joseph's and UMBC at Towson's Tiger Classic.
While there was is no team scoring for the event, the Blue Hens picked up six total wins on the day with four coming in doubles matches.
In the first match of the afternoon, sophomore Denny Lamachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) registered the first win of her Delaware career with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over GW's Egle Jakuciunaite.
Senior Kim Milla (México City, México/CONAMAT) also collected a singles win by defeating SJU's Robyn Ferraro, 6-1, 7-6 (3) in second flight action.
Additionally, the Blue Hens picked up two doubles wins against the Hawks. In top flight play, freshman Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and junior Danea Jonjic' (Split, Croatia/Croatia Natural Sciences and Technical) defeated Aurora Davis and Alex Zachem, 8-4. Seniors Christina Harrington (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) and Abby Martinez (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) fought for a tight, 8-7 (5), victory over Kelly Mulquin and Claire Minnoe.
In doubles action against UMBC, Harrington and junior Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia) defeated Aishu Iyer and Jennifer Christhilf, 8-6 while Martinez and Milla earned a win over the duo by a score of 6-2.
“All in all, today was a very promising start for our program. Playing three strong teams on our first day of competition showed what we are capable of and what we need to work on. Two more days consecutive days of lengthy competition will help to evaluate our fitness level and mental toughness.”
Laura Travis is in her 23rd season as the head coach of the Blue Hens.
· Delaware will face Mount St. Mary's, Towson and UMBC on Saturday.
