NEWARK, Del. -- Led by overall champion Katrina Steenkamer, the University of Delaware women's cross country squad opened its home season with an impressive showing as the Blue Hens captured the team title at their own Delaware Invitational Saturday morning at White Clay Creek State Park.
Steenkamer, a senior from Rising Sun, Md. (St. Mark's, Del. HS), captured her first career individual
title as she covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 22:54.23 to bypass all competitors and edge out teammate Betsy Erlanger (22:59.75). She led the team for the second straight meet after pacing the Hens with a sixth place overall finish at the season-opening Lehigh Invitational back on Aug. 29.
The Hens, who finished second at the meet a year ago, posted a team score of 30 points to easily outdistance runner-up Towson (43) and third place finisher Seton Hall (56). Rowan University captured the team title in the 11-team Division 2-3 meet. On the men's side, Seton Hall won the Division I team title while Rowan captured the 11-team Division II-III championship on the eight-kilometer course.
The Delaware women put five runners in the top 10 to easily win the team title. In addition to Steenkamer (at left) and Erlanger (Upper St. Clair/Pittsburgh, Pa.), Blue Hen freshman Adrienne Fraczkowski (Delaware Military Academy/Wilmington, Del.) was fifth (23:31.26), sophomore Gabby Alaimo (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bridgewater, N.J.) was eighth (24:15.56), and freshman Alana Waggoner (Conard/West Hartford, Conn.) was ninth (24:17.56).
Delaware will return to action Sept. 19 when the Hens travel to Towson for a dual meet with the Tigers at 4 p.m.
