ANNAPOLIS, Md. – With a dramatic penalty kick goal in the final minute of double overtime from junior Elise Krause, the University of Delaware women's soccer team was able to defeat Marist 1-0 Sunday afternoon at the Navy Invitational
The Blue Hens (3-4) and Red Foxes (1-4) played 109 minutes of scoreless soccer before Krause was able to put the ball in the back of the net at the 109:17 mark.
“It feels great to have that gorilla off our back,” said University of Delaware head coach Scott Grzenda, whose team snapped a four-game losing streak with each game coming by a single goal. “We created many quality chances and the girls continued to believe and performed very well. Maddie Brosler gave everything and her effort caused the penalty kick [in double overtime]. We know we came to play and it is exciting to get this result.”
The Blue Hens put consistent pressure on the Red Foxes, but Marist freshman goalkeeper Makala Foley recorded 11 saves in her first career start. Senior Marjana Maksuti led Marist with four shots in the losing effort.
Sophomore Natalie Zelenky had a game-high six shots, while senior goalkeeper Jess Figueroa made four saves to earn her second victory of the season.
The Blue Hens will next be in action this Friday as they return home to face Temple at 7:00 p.m. at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.
