NEWARK, Del. - The University of Delaware women's soccer team was able to hand Temple its first loss of the season Friday night as the Blue Hens defeated the Owls 2-0 at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, UD (4-4) took control in the second half when sophomore Natalie Zelenky broke the scoreless tie with a goal at the 79:01 mark to give Delaware a 1-0 lead. The Chambersburg, Pa. (Mechanicsburg Area HS) native then sealed the game with her second goal of the contest with just 2:39 left to play.
“It felt good to see that all of our hard work is finally paying off,” said Zelenky. “It was great to play at home with these great fans and get the confidence boost that will come with this win.”
Despite Temple's undefeated record coming into the contest, the Blue Hens were the dominant team throughout the game. Delaware outshot the Owls 15-4 and had more corner kicks by a 13-1 margin. UD has either outshot or matched the shot total of its opponent in every game this season.
Friday's matchup was the 10th all-time meeting between the two programs and, with the victory, Delaware now goes to 10-0 against Temple.
Scott GrzendaKayla Cunningham led the Owls with three shots and provided the only two shots on goal Temple had all night. The Owls (7-1) had entered the game having outscored opponents 15-3 with five shutouts this season.
In addition to Zelenky's tremendous performance, Emily Market and Rachel Vaccaro had three shots apiece, while Nikki Adams notched her first assist of the season on Zelenky's second goal. Goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos (above) posted two saves to pick up the shutout.
Friday's game was the second time this season Delaware has scored more than one goal in a game and the first time a Blue Hen contest was not decided by one goal.
Zelenky's three-goal total for the season now has her tied with Adams for the team lead.
The Blue Hens will be back in action Sunday as Delaware hosts Penn at 1 p.m. at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
