NEWARK, Del. – The No. 21 ranked University of Delaware men's soccer team matched the best start in program history as the Blue Hens downed St. Peter's 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
The 1970 Blue Hens are the only other Delaware soccer team to start a season 6-0. That 1970 team advanced to the NCAA Regional quarterfinals and finished with a 9-2-2 record under head coach Loren Kline.
The Blue Hens were able to light up the scoreboard early Sunday as sophomore Guillermo Delgado
notched his sixth goal of the season at the 6:38 mark of the first half.
The Blue Hens added on to their lead early in the second half when junior Joe Dipre scored his fourth goal of the season with an assist from fellow junior Nick DiRienzo.
Despite dominating most of the game, Delaware had some tense moments as it held on to the lead late in the second half.
St. Peter's (1-4) was on the attack for the latter part of the game and cut the Blue Hen lead in half on a Ezequiel Cei goal at the 70:12 mark.
The Peacocks had chances to tie the game in the closing minutes, but Delaware goalkeeper Borja Barbero made clutch saves to preserve the 2-1 Blue Hen victory.
The Blue Hens will next be in action as they travel west to take on a pair of nationally-ranked Pac 12 opponents in California and Stanford. Delaware will face California Friday at 6:30 p.m. and will take on Stanford next Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
