Hens Shine on First Day of SJU Invitational

MERION STATION, Pa. – The University of Delaware women's tennis team began the Saint Joseph's Invitational strong Friday was the Blue Hens went 7-0 on the day.
In the team's lone singles match of the day, senior Christina Harrington (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) came from behind to defeat Villanova's Connor Brewer, 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 in the third flight. The majority of singles action will begin Saturday.
In top flight doubles, freshman Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) and junior Danea Jonjic' (Split, Croatia/Croatia Natural Sciences & Technical) defeated SJU's Claire Minnoe and Kelly Mulquin, 8-3.
Sophomore Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and senior Kim Milla (México City, México/CONAMAT) opened the day in No. 1 doubles with a close 9-7 victory over Kaila Nelson/Allison Radde (Fairfield). The duo then advanced to Saturday play with an 8-5 win over Aurora Davis and Alex Zachem from Saint Joseph's.
The successes continued for the Blue Hens in No. 2 doubles as senior Abby Martinez (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) and junior Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 98 School No. 1953) with wins over Loyola's Julie Clark and Ania Krawiec, 8-1, and SJU's Lauren Roy and Mary-Margaret Ewens, 8-4.
Also in the second flight, senior Christina Harrington (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) and freshman Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) defeated La Salle's Caitlin Coelho and Alexandra Santerelli, 8-1.
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· The Blue Hens are 9-5 (singles) and 12-1 (doubles) to begin the year.
· Christina Harrington is 31-23 all-time in doubles play while Kim Milla improves to 39-30 all-time.
