Delaware Continues to Stand Out at Saint Joseph?s Women's Tennis Invitational

MERION STATION, Pa. – After opening the Saint Joseph's Invitational undefeated, the University of Delaware women's tennis team continued to shine on day two with 12 total victories.
In doubles action, the Blue Hens had three pairs advance to Sunday competition. Sophomore Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and senior Kim Milla (México City, México/CONAMAT) will play in the top flight doubles championship Sunday after picking up an 8-4 win over Monet Stuckey-Willis and Minami Okajima.
In No. 2 doubles, senior Abby Martinez (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) and junior Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 98 School No. 1953) advance following a dominating 8-1 win over Fiorella Coria and Sysenil Orhon from Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel.
Senior Christina Harrington (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) and freshman Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) also recorded a win in No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 victory against SJU's Anne Marie Devlin and Arianne Polatnick.
In top-flight singles play, freshman Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) defeated Fairfield's Allison Radde, 7-6 (5), 6-3, and SJU's Claire Minnoe, 7-5, 6-1 to advance to the bracket semifinals.
Harrington recorded two victories in No. 3 singles with wins over Sacred Heart's Sabrina Navarro Lopez and SJU's Lauren Roy. Studnicki also competed in the third flight with a win over Emma Pezzullo (Sacred Heart) before falling to Ryshena Providence (Drexel), 6-4, 1-6, 10-7.
Delaware wrapped the day by going 4-0 in fourth flight singles action. Martinez defeated Amanda Tilles (Drexel), 6-1, 6-3, and Maureen Devlin (SJU), 6-4, 6-4, to advance. Naumova also advanced to Sunday action with wins against Nicole Eberle (Loyola) and Aphrah Brokaw (Villanova).
“We had so many close matches today, which will help us in the long run. Also, having everybody play three matches today in the heat is excellent for training purposes. Overall, we had a very strong day.”
HEN SCRATCHINGS
· Freshman Arielle Shuren leads the team with a four-match winning streak.
· Seniors Christina Harrington and Abby Martinez have both won three straight.
· Senior Kim Milla is now tied for 20th in school history with 40 career doubles wins. Julie Schiller (2004-08) and Martine Street (1998-02) both posted 40 doubles victories as Blue Hens.
· Delaware has improved to 18-9 (singles) and 15-2 (doubles) during the fall slate.
