PHOENIX, Md. -- The University of Delaware women's golf team successfully defended its Tignanelli Towson Invitational crown while Blue Hen junior Nathalie Filler became the first medalist winner in program history during UD's 2014 season-opening tournament on Sunday and Monday.
The Blue Hens, who won three team titles last year including the 2013 Tignanelli Towson Invitational, finished tied for first place along with the host Tigers as both squads posted a 303 score on Sunday and a 305 on Monday. Delaware won the tiebreaker, giving the Blue Hens their second straight Tignanelli Towson Invitational championship and their fourth team victory in school history.
Filler (at left) earned medalist honors at the invitational, as she followed up her opening round 75 by tying the Blue Hen single round record with a one under par 71 on the par 72, 6,162-yard course at Towson Golf & Country Club. Filler, who won the tournament by two strokes while finishing at two over par, also set a UD record with a 146 two-round score.
Blue Hen freshman Rachel Lee, competing in her first collegiate tournament, finished in third place with a five over par 74-75-149. Playing in the final group of the day, Lee knocked home a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole to pull Delaware into a tie with Towson in the team standings.
Sophomore Vitoria Teixeira, who carded a 77-77-154 during the invitational, and junior Vimonthip Benjasupawan, who fired a 76-78-154, each tied for 14th place in the individual standings at 10 over par.
Andi Slane finished with a 12 over par score of 81-75-156 to tie for 23rd place, while senior and fellow co-captain Baralee Theinthong also tied for 23rd after carding a 76-80-156 for the tournament. UD sophomore Marie Bogenez, who fired a 14 over par 78-80-158, ended in a tie for 30th place.
