NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women's basketball team used double-digit performances from three players in addition to 18 total free throws to defeat Hofstra University, 64-53, Thursday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.
With the win, the Blue Hens (7-9, 2-3 Colonial Athletic Association) put a blemish on the Pride's perfect CAA mark as
Hofstra falls to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in league play.
Delaware was led in scoring by junior Courtni Green (at left; Winchester, Va./Millbrook) and sophomore Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J./Paterson Kennedy), who each had 18 points on the night. Brown had the hot hand to start the game as she scored 14 of her points in the first stanza while Green took over in the second by posting 16.
Sophomore Hannah Jardine (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada/O'Donel) added her third double double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Blue Hens had not held a double-digit advantage over Hofstra until the 3:27 mark in the second half when Green drained her 100th career three-pointer to put Delaware ahead, 56-46. With the trey, Green became just the sixth player in program history to hit the century mark in baskets behind the arc.
Kelly Loftus guided the Pride with 14 points while Ashunae Durant collected nine rebounds.
“Hofstra is such an explosive team, they like to play quickly, but we got our tempo and I thought our kids did a really nice job. We kept them off the glass, and then we got on the offensive boards. This was probably one of the better games for us. Everybody really chipped in at the end of the game. I thought there was a lot of growth from our kids and now we just have to build on it and keep moving along.”
Junior Courtni Green
“We had a lot of energy coming into the game and I think that we were efficient in every category. It's a great feeling to get this win, but now we have to move on and focus on William & Mary. We are taking each game one by one and we are continually learning. Hopefully everything that happened this game can carry over into the next one.”
Sophomore Erika Brown
“We had letdowns today, but we didn't hang our heads. We kept fighting. We refuse to give up because we want to win the [CAA] Championship. We always have to follow the game plan and I think we did a really good job of that today. We have to go hard for every point we play. It doesn't matter if we're playing the worst team in the CAA or the best team, we have to give all our effort for every play.”
